DOMESTIC VIOLENCE We provide treatment for batterers; people who are abusive in their primary relationships. Domestic violence is a pattern of physical and psychological abuse, threats, intimidation, isolation or economic coercion used by one person to exert power and control over another person. This could happen in the context of a dating, family or household relationship. Domestic violence is maintained by societal and cultural attitudes, institutions and laws which may not name the violence as wrong. Our goal is to work with perpetrators of violence to intervene in an abusive relationship to ensure the safety of the victim and their children. We will assist the batterer in recognizing and understanding behaviors that lead to violence, and to hold them accountable for their abusive behavior. Our Batterers Education Program is a 26 session model, each session lasting 90 minutes. This includes: Education about the causes and forms of domestic violence. Skills for handling immediate conflict situations without becoming abusive. A Change of attitude and beliefs that underlie abusive behavior. Profile of a Batterer: 1. Jealousy - often imagines partner is having affairs 2. Tries to isolate partner 3. Tries to control partner 4. Jekyll and Hyde personalities 5. May have other problems with the law; or may not 6. Explosive temper; flies into a rage without provocation 7. Blames partner 8. Verbal abuse in addition to physical abuse (insults, put-downs, name-calling) 9. May come from an abusive family 10. May be more violent when partner is pregnant or soon after giving birth 11. Denies the abuse, or minimizes its severity; or seems not to remember 12.
